Plan Check review and approval is required for each of the following before remodeling or construction to a restaurant, grocery store or other fixed food facility:
- Construction of any fixed facility
- Remodel or significant menu change of an existing food facility
- Installation, replacement or modification of any equipment including, but not limited to, cooking equipment, preparation equipment, ventilation hoods, water heaters, floors/walls/ceilings, plumbing, sinks, etc.
- Installation of any vending machine which contains any amount of potentially hazardous foods
How to apply for Plan Check Review for your Fixed Food Facility
Step 1: Please submit all the following items together as a complete package.
- Plan Check Application
- Plan Check Checklist
- Complete, legible set of proposed design / plans. To include the following:
- The scope of work
- Equipment Plan
- Finish schedule
- Mechanical schedule
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Total number of Type 1 hoods (if applicable)
- Total number of Type 2 hoods (if applicable)
- Proposed Menu
- Manufactures’ Specifications Sheets of proposed equipment
Plan Check submittals, in order of received, will undergo a thorough review for completeness. Incomplete submittals face rejection. After acceptance, an invoice for initial Plan Check fees will be issued based on scope of work. Submittals may be made at our office or email the digital package to [email protected].
When initial Plan Check fees have been paid your submittal will be assigned to an inspector and begin review.
Plan checks undergo a 20-business-day review period, during which inspectors will either approve or request revisions of your plans.
Step 2: After your Plans are reviewed
- If revisions are required, you will be required to resubmit plans based upon Revisions request letter indicates is needed.
- If your plans are approved, you will receive approved stamped plans.
Step 3: After your Plans are approved
- Required to call our office (408-918-3400) or [email protected] to make three inspection appointments at various stages of construction.
- Preliminary – framing and plumbing only
- Pre-final – finishes (flooring, walls, etc)
- Final – everything is completed and all equipment is operational – no food allowed unless discussed with Plan Check inspector during pre-final inspection.
- All plan check fees must be paid in full prior to scheduling final inspection.
- A completed application for a Permit to Operate must be on file with our department prior to final inspection.
Step 4: Permit to Operate
- You are required to pay your operating permit fees before you receive a permit to operate.
