The Drinking Water Program oversees the regulation of the following water systems:
- Individual water system (one connection)
- Shared water system (2-4 connections)
- Spring water systems
- State small water systems (5-14 connections)
Individual, Shared and Spring water systems are a one-time review and inspection. State Small systems are inspected annually for construction and maintenance purposes and the investigation of any suspected waterborne disease outbreaks. State Small water systems are also required to submit quarterly bacteriological water test results to the Department for water quality monitoring.
The Department is responsible for the review of all new well construction applications for domestic and agricultural uses prior to the submission to the Santa Clara Valley Water District to insure adequate separation from on-site sewage disposal with any new wells.
